The name Obney

Post by cbitterli » Tue Jul 28, 2009 4:47 pm

Near Bankfoot there is a place called Obney Hills. Nearby there are three villages with Obney in there name. My mother's maiden name was Obney.
I would like to find out how those places got that name and the origin or meaning of the name Obney. Thank you for any information that you can provide me.

Hi cbitterli

Have you checked in George F. Black's "The Surnames of Scotland: Their Origin, Meaning and History" to see if the name is metioned there? The book can usually be found in reasonably sized libraries and also in book shops in Scotland. Might be worth a look just incase it is there.

I would think there is a strong possibility that the surname and place names are linked, as there are other examples of surnames having been derived from placenames one way or another

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi cbitterli,

If you go to Google Book Search and search Obney, Scotland you will get a bunch of results referring to the villages of Upper Obney and Nether Obney and also a farm called Meikle Obney. Some of these appear to be historical accounts so maybe you can find some information there.

I don't have time right now to check them out myself, but it looks like some interesting reading!
