Why would you name your son Ramsay Wardlaw?.....

Post by joette » Fri Nov 11, 2005 4:05 pm

I have just discovered this new ancestor via TS & Freecen. He was born 1833 in Glencorse,Midlothian & being the 2nd son would have expected him to be named John but as the eldest son is John presume both parents Fathers had that name & so they chose a"different" name.
I know of Balfour Wardlaw -Ramsay & that he had connections to Dalkeith & the Army.I plead ignorance but who the heck was he? Did he win a Famous victory pre1833? Thats how some poor girl has the middle name "Ladysmith" guess when she was born? I thought maybe they had decided on the name for that reason.
I am just grateful that they did give him such a distinctive name as his surname is McFarlane & guess how many of them there are to trawl through?

Joette
I have an ancestor Archibald Lawrie Findlay of Loudon Ayrshire.I wondered about it,then I was reading something about Loudon Parish and the minister was called Rev. Archibald Lawrie. So is it just a coincidence or was he named after the minister? He was the fourth son so maybe they ran out of names.

Janet
