I have a copy of an Ordinance Survey map showing what was my gtx3 grandparents farm. The area of land has name of Croft and also a "P" . Does anyone know what this is ? The surrounding farms have numbers or the occasional B.M followed by a number or just a W.
Thanks
Tracey

Hi Tracey,
I think these are (W) well, (P) pump and (BM) bench mark. The first two were for water supply to the farm, hence most of them being close to the farmhouse. The benchmark with a height in feet above sea level marked beside it formed part of the Ordnance Survey mapping system.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Thank you Andrew
I have uploaded the image. Do you know if the two "angle" shapes in the corner would be where the actual house was ?

Blackcairn - to the left of Newton of Melrose.
Many thanks

At a best guess, yes. I will see if I can find it on any other maps and find any more clues. The two angle shapes appear to be farm buildings set around a yard. The house may have formed part of one of the angled shapes.Tracey wrote:Do you know if the two "angle" shapes in the corner would be where the actual house was ?
