St James's Road, Townhead.....

Post by AnnieMack » Wed Mar 01, 2006 11:39 pm

I am going cross eyed here looking at the great maps on the National Library site. I have been able to find St James's Street but don't think the enumerator would make such a blatant error as to mix up Road and Street. I can't find this road on a current map either.

Does anyone know the area well enough to help me with my dilemma?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Annie,

St James Road is there (here's hoping it is the right one - I don't know my way round Glasgow).

http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/to ... entre.html

Select sheet VI.11.2 (the one with the red arrow pointing east in it - don't click on the arrow). The road leading from the south-east corner of the map towards the centre is St James Road.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

St James Road -

near to the Royal Infirmary and Glasgow Cathedral.
Castle Street, Catherdral Street, Stirling Road, St James Road all sort of merge together around there

The Post Code G4 OPX [ for The Martyrs' Public School - Charles Rennie Mackintosh worked for the design firm,] should get you there on :

Thank you all. My pc has been in the huff for a couple of days so I have just managed to look at all the links. I think a visit to Glasgow is now in order.

Hi
The Virtual Mitchell has several pics.
http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/cgi-bin/ ... t+James+Rd

St James' Road run from Taylor Street to Parliamentary Road
St James' Street from Castle Street to Parliamentary Road.

I have on a Word doc. all families in St. James Road from the 1881 census.

And all names listed there in the Glasgow PO Directory in the years 1852, 1862, 1893, 1903, 1953 and 1961

Plus several street maps from the same periods

If they are of any help

:D Annie, Sr James Road has been there for a long time. I remember my dad taking me to the St James picture house(bug house) to get me'oot me mothers road' We lived in Parliamentary Road Townhead and some one has just given you directions. It surprises me how St James is still there but they have done away with Parliamentary Rd.

 Yes Davie the picture house was called the ST James. I remember the cowboy films with Buck Jones and Tim McCoy, the cartoons and a particular funny about Rinso, perhaps before your time. The best thing was the sweets my dad bought for me on the way. I don't think kids today get such a kick out of little treats. By the way the name Dowie strikes a chord with me and we have a Henry Buchanan within our family group.
