Robroyston.....

Post by wini » Tue May 09, 2006 10:54 am

I am not sure where to put this query.
I was born and grew up in Robroyston, not too far from Wallace's Well.
The house I lived in and those round about were rented accommodation but not Council houses. It was always said they were Jerry/Gerry built and since I was a child during WW2 I thought the Germans had built them. I couldn't quite figure out why.
They are still there today as my daughter called in to have a look last year on a trip over.
Where can I find out Who built the houses and for what purpose.
There were houses at the bottom of the street and they were miners houses although the local mine was no longer operating in the 1940's
The streets with those houses were Robroyston Road, Hilda Crescent, Sheila Street, Winifred Street, Olive Street. Earnock Street and ,I think Zena Street.

Thanks wini

Jerry/Gerry built housing was pre-fabricated kits that could be built very quickly. Especially helpful after the Blitz when housing was required very quickly.

Most of these housing schemes were intended to be temporary but many are still in use and in good condition today.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.
