does anyone know were Bainlongart is? .....

Post by winger » Wed May 24, 2006 1:07 am

Hi, I just found John McLellan listed on the 1841 Census for Argyll - yipee! however the place listed for the census is Bainlongart - I know this is somewhere in South Knapdale - but where?. when I google for it nothing comes up, his daughter Agnes McLellan lists her birth as Lochgilphead, is it near this area. I would appreciate any information anyone can supply.
thanks in advance.

Hi Winger,

To find Barnlongart (note currrent spelling) on a modern map, go to www.streetmap.co.uk and do a search for Barnlongart. There it is, close to Lochcaolisport - one of the many sea inlets on the west coast of Argyll.

It is not far from Lochgilphead (zoom the above map out). Through Lochgilphead, headings southwards, then turn off on the B8024, and continue for a few miles.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Winger

Have you looked at Old Maps for this location? www.old-maps.co.uk

Using the spelling that Andrew P provided you can find it if you search for it as an address rather than a place name. This gives a map from 1872 so will give you some idea of how quiet the area looked at the time!
