Contin Ross & Cromarty.....

Post by Denny » Sun Jun 18, 2006 3:31 pm

Back again and still hunting! Can anybody tell me about the area of Contin please :?: I have traced my Angus family on the 1861 census and my great grandmother Ann was there, with her family, aged 17. She is listed as "housekeeper" and unmarried in an area that looks like LUIBRACH, any thoughts anyone. This is driving me mad. Ann disappears after that unitl 1868, where she turns up, having given birth to my grandfather James Angus in Edinburgth, who she left as a boarder, age 3yrs with a family there :(
I wonder if perhaps she worked for a family in the area and moved with them as it seems grandfather was probably illegitimate, no birth cert. but a hospital record :!:
Grateful for any help

I think I have found the place in Contin parish. I went to www.old-maps.co.uk and input LUIBRACH. It came back with a map showing LUBRIACH. It is probably one and the same. It is well out in the sticks and I would hazard a guess to be a hill sheep farm, or part of a hunting estate.

To see it on a modern map, go to www.streetmap.co.uk and input the co-ordinates 235830,873530 and click on the OS Grid marker, then search. You will need to zoom out using the conrol below-right of the map to get a more meaningful map. It is off the Garve to Ullapool road, about 8 miles north of Garve, then a couple of miles up a small road into Strath Vaich (or if you prefer the Gaelic: Srath a' Bhàthaich - now you've pronounced that, you can put your teeth back in  ).

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for the info. it is deffinately the correct place  The sheep farming makes sense, as gt. grandmother's brother's and father were shepherds'. I imagine they must have worked for the local Laird, perhaps she was also employed by the family. I have tried to trace back to the owners of Strathvaich Lodge but that seems pretty impossible as it has been held in a trust since 1926 :!:

I did try the local minister in Contin some time ago, but no luck there, he didn't even know of Lubriach and it's in his Parish :!:

Gave up on the Gaelic, grandfather could speak it, father a little, but guess thats where it ended

Many thanks for your help
