You need a response from someone with local knowledge, as the centre of Greenock, like many other town centres in the West of Scotland has undergone considerable "redevelopment", often at the cost of the demolition of buildings, commercial and residential, which, with an application of a reasonable level of investment, as has now more recently happened, could have been refurbished.

That's not to say that there weren't many buildings, including tenements, in Glasgow and the West of Scotland that had been so badly built back in the late decades of the 1800s and the early decades of the 1900s that the best outcome was demolition, but there were also many other tenements that were in perfectly good condition that were casualties of the 1960s/70s/80s view that anything of that era was best dealt with by demolition :!: :!:

Hi Ellen,

Ann Street and West Blackhall Streets are still there in Greenock, although they may not look anything like when your ancestors lived there.

When I was home last year I went to visit a friend who lives in Ann Street, and was surprised to see that she lived in a high rise building.

There is a great book called "Greenock from old Photographs" and it has some wonderful photos of old Greenock. It has a great photo of Ann Street as it looked when I was growing up there.

The book is now out of print but you may be able to find a used copy on Amazon.com
