knowing my 'whereabouts'.....

Post by Rachel » Wed Jul 05, 2006 5:14 pm

:? I do believe that this has been asked before, but I do have my senior moments. Can anyone tell me where New Vennell was or is! and can anyone suggest a good map of Old Glasgow to help me sort out some of these addresses that crop up in my searches. Would be grateful for any replies.

Hi Rachel,
If you go to -
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/to ... plans.html
--
Select Glasgow [1857-8]
Select Centre Square
Select VI.11.12 (3rd up on RH side)
New Vennel will be seen at the middle of the RH side,
click on the area to zoom in.

The eastern part of New Vennel is on VI.11.13
This is 3rd up on LH side of the Top Right Square (north east).

Susan Miller's "A Guide to Glasgow Addresses" (2 parts) are very useful for old Glasgow streets.
Part 1; 1700 - 1825 Merchant City.
Part 2; 1826 - 1950 Industrial City.
Both are available from Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS - http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/

In Part 2 it says that New Vennel was at 214 High St - so it was easy to find on the NLS map.

Thanks for writing Rachel,
and glad to hear it will be of help to your cousin. :D
The combination of Susan Miller's books & the NLS maps can often help in locating a Glasgow street in the 1800s.

Hi Jack,

I have folk from New Vennel too, so I was interested in looking at the map. But when I look at V1.11.13, I can't see it.

Hi Nina,
You'll see the continuation of New Vennel at the middle of the LH side on VI.11.13.
It runs NW to SE down to the Burnside Factory which is near bottom centre on the map.
Both of which overlooked the College Green.
Just click as many times as you need to zoom in till you can read the name.
Does this help any?

Yes thanks Jack...I think I was trying to hurry this morning. Interesting how all my relatives seemed to base their individual families in one tiny area of Glasgow. This same family also lived in High street, Havannah Street, Duke Street and Sth Pettigrew Street.
