Chancelot or Chance Lot, Edinburgh?.....

I'm trying to find a place called, in 1861, Chancelot or Chance Lot in or near Edinburgh.
I found one reference that said
"Chancelot, house and garden, Ord.Surv. 1852. " on google cache but I can't access the page live to investigate further.
Has anyone any suggestions please, I'm all googled out.

Also can anyone tell me if it's possible to find the parish of a Roman Catholic priest with nothing other than his name.
Again Edinburgh area 1861, F. Gascoigne.

Well here is a long shot for you. A search on the 1881 census by "Chancelot" gives two addresses.....and here they are:

You'll find Frederick in the the 1861 census at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , along with the name of his church.

Don't worry about the relationship shown to the Head of the household, - it only means that he was living in the same household.

It brings you back! I used to cycle past, I think, Chancelot Lane off the Ferry Road on my way to school every morning. Would never dream of letting my kids cycle a road like that now, but then my parents didn´t know a lot of what I did so the same applies probably to the next generation.

I spent hours searching & found nothing like that, I've bookmarked the site as I'm sure it will be useful as I find more ancestors.

My GGGGrandfather, James FERN/FERANCE & his son, also James, apparently worked as gardeners at Chancelot prior to James Jnr's emigration to Australia in 1862.

I wonder if they may also have lived on the property.

Seeing Queensferry Rd on the map provided by Annette M I've realised just how small the world sometimes must seem...
My maternal Grandfather was Harold CARTER born Sydney NSW 1899 son of William CARTER & Elizabeth FERN.
William CARTER born in Hay NSW 1865, son of William CARTER & Maria FINLEY.
Elizabeth FERN born in Bundaberg QLD 1874, daughter of James FERN/FERANCE & Elizabeth McIVOR who emigrated to Oz in 1862 from Edinburgh.
Maria Finley born in Queensferry, Perthshire, Scotland c.1839 & emigrated to OZ pre 1864.

I'm going map searching now to see if Queensferry, Perthshire has any proximity to Queensferry Rd, Edinburgh

Hi Vicki,

Queensferry Road on that map is Ferry Road nowadays - presumably it was the route from Leith to (South) Queensferry. Queensferry Road, Edinburgh is now from Edinburgh city centre towards (South) Queensferry.

North and South Queensferry stand on each bank of the Firth of Forth, where the ferry crossing was from the Edinburgh area to Fife (now replaced by the Forth Bridges). South Queensferry was in West Lothian (until relatively recent boundary changes), and North Queensferry is in Fife. I cannot think of a Queensferry in Perthshire - do you have a parish that it was in, or where it was near to?
