Baltic Hotel, Aberdeen.....

Post by Jamboesque » Wed Aug 23, 2006 11:53 pm

Folks,

Does anyone know of the location (Street, Road etc) for the Baltic Hotel in Aberdeen.

A couple of relies got married there in 1883, tried googling but all I got were address's in Scandinavia, funnily enough. :?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Jack

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!

Hi Jack

A most perplexing problem this :? ......one would think a hotel would have been in existance 2 years earlier and be picked up from the census quite easily. In this case while there is a Baltic Street in Aberdeen there are no families enumerated as hotelkeeper or some such living on it. Furthermore there is not an address for a Baltic Hotel or the like anywhere in all of Scotland for 1881 :(

I'm afraid I have no answer to give but did give it a shot....

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jack

I have selflessly decided to abjure all jokes about most hotels in Aberdeen being Baltic to opine that it is likely to have been near the harbour. It possibly opened between 1881 and 1883 or changed its name during that time. I'm in Auld Reekie just now but once I get home I'll see if I can find out more.

Hi Jack,

I looked up the 1882 and 1883 Street Directories for Aberdeen today looking for a Baltic hotel and there is not an entry. Having said that, not everyone could afford to put an entry in it so maybe this was the case for this particular place. There was a Bath Hotel in Bath Street though.

Elaine

Well done that person. Had to check other 'th' combinations on the certificate but I reckon you've knocked it on the head with 'Bath' rather than 'Baltic'. :D

I reckon the registrar was trying to squeeze one more certificate out of his nib before re-sharpening / fitting a new one or what ever. It's either that or he had a hang-over and still had the shakes.....

Thanks again

From the bizarre letter forms and wacky writing we see as a regular feature here on TS I'm afraid I lean more towards the latter theory than the former...

Hi Jack,

The hotel in Bath Street now is the Royal Hotel

http://www.royalhotel.uk.com/

I would think that this would be the site of the old Bath Hotel as it's only a tiny street, not certain though.
