Far travelled - NOT

Post by emanday » Sun Oct 01, 2006 10:09 pm

My son, not yet 30, has lived in four different cities.

I have lived in three countries, five cities (including one only a village 14 miles from a town).

Four generations (so far) of my Grandmother's rellies, going back from HER grandfather, all lived and died in the small village of Tobernochy on the Isle of Luing, Argyll.

Makes you think, dunnit

Hi Mary

I realised you were on Seil for a while but hadn't noticed your Luing connection.
My brother has retired to Luing with his wife as that's where she's from.
She was a MacDougall by her ain name and her brother was headstockman on the Cadzow's farm. They live in Toberonachy.
Oddly enough when they moved back to the island they bought their house from a lady (maiden name McVicar) who is the sister of a colleague of mine years ago.
Coincidences all round.
I'll be seeing them tomorrow when I pick them up from the Gourock ferry.
Just wondered if there is some connection there?

My lot were McDonalds, (or MacDonalds as my Gran insisted, but disproved by her ancestry).

Don't suppose your brother might fancy taking some piccies of any gravestones in the locality, would he? My McDonalds have Charles, Catherine nee Clark, Duncan and Christina nee Brown plus the odd Christy, Alexander, Duncan, Donald and Janet scattered around. As far as I can make out, most of the men worked in the slate quarries

Innit it strange, I lived in Balvicar, Seil for four years and didn't know that Luing was where my Gran's folks came from. If I'd found out just a few months sooner, I could have had a good old root around myself.

Maybe a wee holiday is called for.

I'll ask tomorrow Mary

The wee graveyard and old church just outside Toberonachy is lovely.

It sits on a bit of a hill so its quite exposed but with a wall round it , its quite tranquil inside. I've been asked to get a McInnes headstone photo for someone in Oz so I will check whether my brother has gone digitial yet.

That would be really great if he could, Russell.

Tell him I'm madly fluttering my elderly eyelashes over the internet at him

Hi
re Staying in one area.
I am in touch with some one else who is researching my daughter in law's family.
Before her maternal Grandmother left Kent during WW1 at least one branch of the family had been in the same area (10 mls or so) of Kent since 1475, 400+ yrs.
I'm a Cousin - are you? http://www/LostCousins.com

On my mothers side for four generations back from her I can walk to any of the locations within 15 minutes of my house. My mother and My 4th Great Gran died in the same street (obviously not at the same time).

On my dads side we have one family who are quoted in a historical book as staying in the same house for over 400 years uninterupted. The book was written in 1842.

Come to think of it. there is a street in Rutherglen where BOTH sides of my father's family seem to have lived in for several generations. My Grandad was still living there till he got too old to look after himself and came to live with us.

D'ye think Glasgow City Council might consider renaming it Stewart or Sloan Street?

I just have to say that I've been amazed to read about your stay-at-home rellies! That must make it so much easier to track them down. Mine are not nearly so well-behaved. For example, I have been trying for quite some time to figure out which Peter/Patrick Giles/Geils/Gilles, etc, is mine in a certain time frame. There are not that many! But... so far I have found that one of the ones born in Angus was the one who died in Aberdeen; the one born in Aberdeen came from a family in Brechin who were only in Aberdeen for a year or two; the one born and married in Inverness turns out to be the one who died in Berwick; and I can't figure out what happened to the several born in Berwick and Glasgow or the one born in rural Aberdeenshire. They just disappear (i.e. marry and have children in a parish where the records are lost and/or die before 1855). Only the one born in Stirling appears to have lived and died in the same place (but who knows, it may actually be one of the other ones-- I'm afraid to look too closely 8-[ ) Do you think there is something in my genes that doesn't allow my family to stay in one place (just look at my "location" on the left  )
Sarah, taking solace in being able to blame it all on the genes :D

Ouch! Either a bit of a wanderlust gene going there?

OR

Is there a possibility that their occupations might have been a factor?

I have another line that seemed to be rooted in Ayr, mainly St Quivox, from somewhere around the 1600's and don't appear to have branched much further than close by hamlets in the surrounding area until the early 1800's. Still, compared to my Luing lot who lived in one small village, they at least DID move about for about 200 years, albeit only a matter of a few miles.
