Greetin’s Aw
The Baillie was a Glasgow paper that ran from 1872 into the early 20th century.
The pics that I hopefully transferred to the Gallery are from the first year of publication.
It gives a great insight to what the opinions of the day were in the city.
Every week, the front page had “Men you know” as the leading article.
It gave a wee spiel on the subject (often hilarious) in question, and a drawing of him
The caricatures are amazing as are the cartoons throughout. (see topic, Glencairn Drive)
I have over a dozen full runs and several single issues, and there are 52 issues per run.
The interesting bit for you lot is that, I have in the “Men you know”, found relatives of two people researching their family history.
How lucky were they?
And thanks again to the Admin staff, who take the time and effort to put these pics in the Gallery.

One of the highlights of my research was in the Mitchell finding an article about my ggg grandfather in the Baillie (No. 2788).
There was a page full of details on his life and his thoughts, wonderful stuff.
There was also a full page pencil sketch ..... by the 1920's the drawing style was more realistic.
You don't have a copy from March 1926 for sale do you?Davie wrote:have over a dozen full runs and several single issues, and there are 52 issues per run.

Hi Jim
I don't have any as late as 1926.
I'll check to see if my brother has though.
I will be in Helensburgh this week, in the hope of buying some more.
The lad there has 10 full runs, don't know the dates.
They very rarely come up at auction or at any book fair.
They are not expensive. The last lot I bought came in at £25 for a bound set of 52 issues.
I'll keep my eye open for you.
Sometimes the Mitchell has duplicated copies.
I can check that for you if you want.
And we can mibbie do a swap.
Some of theirs have only the articles and I have the drawings.
I have a fair amount of Glasgow ephemera in my collection, so if you are ever looking for any info. on the city, jist let me know.
