1301 Govan Road??

Post by Miss Poohs » Tue Nov 21, 2006 9:58 pm

Hi Guys - back on the trail again - and I've got a new question for you, already  .

Traced back a family members death and noticed they and a few others (non rellies on other certs) have their place of death registered as 1301 Govan Road, Glasgow.

Was this a hospital or some kind of institution?

Hi Miss Poohs,

A search on TalkingScot provides the answer. 1301 Govan Road is/was the Southern General Hospital.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Miss Poohs

Andrew is correct but he could have added that previously it was the Merryflats Poorhouse so if the folk were in there in the 1800's it was the Poorhouse then and it was only the later part of the century that it was used as a hospital. Some of the Poorhouse residents who had mental illness did not leave the hospital until the early 1900's. Most of them in a wooden waistcoat poor souls.

Hi there Weezy - my Herbert was Herbert Todd, so it doesn't sound like it could be if Herbert was their surname.

Although he did move to Govan and lived there for a while.

You never know!! :D

Hi Weezy,
my Aunt (through marriage to paternal Uncle) was a Hester.
I have done some work for my cousin on this line.
