Hi Sylvia

Do you mean parishes, or registration districts?

The former have been relatively stable over the years, but the latter have undergone a number of significant reorganisations over the years since 1855, leading to situations where a family seems to disappear, whereas all that has happened is that their address has been "moved" from one registration district to another.

For a description of the development and changes in registrations districts in Glasgow since 1855, see the "Registrars" tab here on TalkingScot, based on extensive research by Andrew Paterson.

If you contact Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS, they have at least one publication that shows Glasgow maps in terms of registration districts at various dates.

Thanks David, not sure which I need really.
Searching SP tonight, the areas I have from other records are Maryhill, Govan, Barony etc and I'd like to know where these are in relation to each other.

Hi Sylvia,
The Parishes in the Glasgow area on the OPR, other than The Barony or Glasgow city or High Church, would take in at one time or another,
Cadder
Cathcart
Eastwood
Gorbals
Govan

So the map Mary posted is pretty guid.

On the Stats you would have:

Anderston
Blackfriars
Blythswood
Bridgeton
Cadder
Camlachie
Cathcart
Clyde
Dennistoun
Eastwood
Gorbals
Govan
Hutcheston
Kelvin
Kinning Park
Maryhill
Milton
Partick
Plantation
Shettleston
St Rollox
Tradeston

And a good few of them would have come under The Barony as well.
If you type in any surname in Freecen on the 1841 census in Barony, then check out what district they were living in.
The Parish covered a good bit of what we know as Glasgow after 1855.

Aileen Smart has written a couple of wee tomes, the Villages of Glasgow.
They would you an idea of the areas you are looking at.
I think they are good value for money.

Ahhh yes I think that's what I needed to know. Which "villages" came under which Parish.
It would be no good me clicking on a hopeful name if the "village" was way over the other side of the city....if you see what I mean :?
It would definately save me a few wasted credits and hopefuly narrow down the options a bit.
Thank you, Sylvia
