If you click on the above site there are a load of old photos.
I laughed at the style of some!I also noted the changes in social customs-lots of cigs hanging from mouths, check the unPC figures in the Gala Parade(thought I had found an early Afro-caribbean resident).
The pictures in the main are of interest to those with ancestors from the area like me but if you want a pictorial historical snapshot of a place they're worth a look.
I have to say that the wains look malnourished-think I glimpsed some rickets, the women washed-out & the men as thin as rails.Hard life.
The washing day one is an eye-opener.No even a wash-house.
I really appreciate what a hard life it must have been as they struggled to survive & yet there are lots of smiles about.

Look at that pile of washing...a lot of hard work!
Don't know anyone from Penicuik, but I love looking at old photographs. Thanks.
Regards,
Anne H

That looks like the mangle I remember from our washhouse, and not so very long ago! (well, half a century or so). We did have a primitive washing machine, but you had to be careful not to have a hand in the sink and the machine at the same time, otherwise you got a not inconsiderable shock. Obviously the earth was not quite in order, on reflection.
Now you have to understand the washing machine´s brain and program correctly.............
