Parish of Polmont, Stirling

Post by Anne H » Sat Dec 16, 2006 7:50 pm

I have an MC that has a Residence that looks like "Guardown" or possibly "Guardrum". I've Goggled it and looked on the Old Maps but can't find anything close. Has anyone heard of this place in Polmont?

Regards,
Anne H

Anne,

Not sure about this one, the only two places I can think of off the top of my head that begin with G are Grahamston in Falkirk and Grangemouth.

I also looked up multimap and found a "Gilston Crescent" but nothing close to Guardown.

Sorry I can't be any more help. Hopefully someone else might know.

Believe it or not but I was just looking at this area this morning for my Robb's

Hi Andy,

Thanks for checking. Maybe I'll get lucky and see a mention of this place on one of the census headers as I'm going along. If I see any of your Robb's on my travels, I'll let you know.

Regards,
Anne

Hi Anne and Andy,
Could it be GUARDROOM ?
It does look like it starts with "Guard" anyway.

Hi Anne
Looks a bit like Guardrum... but I get the feeling from a Google that there is one of these in Ayrshire which is not much help!!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jack,

Many thanks...Guardroom did enter my mind too...thought he might have lived in the guardroom at the coalmines :?

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for looking. I also Goggled Guardrum, but in Polmont and came up with pages of nothing that is of help...so far

Actually, he lived with his family in a place called the "Divities" in 1841 (from the census) and I found a description of that place on the Mining Site, soooooo, at present I'm looking through the mining site again just on the offchance I might find some mention of it also as some type of housing. I'm going cross-eyed :!:

Many thanks to all for the replies.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne,
There is an area named GARDRUM Moss & a GARDRUM farm? SW of Polmont.
It's abt halfway between Polmont & Slamannan town.
But seems it may be just inside Slamannan Parish itself?
There are a few coal pits very nearby - just to the east of Guardrum Moss.

Snap Jack - I just found a GURDRUM in Polmont.

You can view it here.

Zoom in and it is just a little SW of the P in Polmont.

On the site Roy suggested type 290052,675628 in the coordinate box and zoom in.

Kind regards,
Annette M
