Thanks for that one Andy
I was born near Haddington and my mother was a local councillor there just after the war (WWII before any bright spark gets a comment in
),
so the town has lots of memories for me.

My ancestors are from that area and still stay out there in areas like Gifford, Drem and Haddington itself.

Hi Andy
I was born in Ormiston but my ancestry hails from Fife and Stirling areas.
My father was the Coal Company mechanic and ambulance driver.
We must have similar twisted taste since you chose the same avatar as me for the pairty. (which I was unable to attend

Just read the interesting history of Haddington. When I was growing up I was told that Haddington was originally called 'The Hidden Toun' because the town lay low down on the banks of the Tyne and couldn't be seen from the London to Edinburgh route. Anyone else heard this or have I been spouting rubbish to visitors to East Lothian for years?

I think you were misled with that story. The main Edinburgh to London road went through the middle of Haddington until the 1920s/1930s(?). Only then did the road which later became the A1 divert around Haddington. That road too has been superseded by the current A1 in the 1990s. So if Haddington was descibed as hidden, it was not hidden from the main road.
All thebest,
AndrewP

HI
Just browsing and came across you rmessage. I lived in Haddington from 1974 to 1980, and my daughter lives there now with her family.
I was always aware of 2 theories for the name. One the 'hidden toun' bit and the other Hadden's Town, as in some ancient ruler or king.
The place has changed a lot since we moved out in 1980 with big new estates on the outskirts. Essentially, the town centre will never change because of very close monitoring and planning by the local council.
