Aberdeen Area
Hi,
I hope everyone has backed all their stuff up!! I just lost all entered information and have spent the last two weeks re entering all my data. The good news is I found a few things I had missed.
Does anyone know what 39 Frederick St. Aberdeen was about 1876. I have a great born there and the cert says "nurse and Inmate" present.
Makes me think it may have been a poorhouse or hospital but that doesn't fit with the rest of the info. They were married at the same address the year before.
Any help appreciated
Jacquie

Me again Jacquie
I have a (yet to be confirmed) rellie whose DC states that the informant was an Inmate. On checking the address of the property it turned out to be a tenement building, not any kind of institution. Some of the other members on here suggested that the term was likely used to denote the informant simply lived in the same building.

There were 8 families living at 39 Frederick St in 1881 so some sort of tenement I imagine.
The term inmate just means that they were living in the same household. I've had that term used when a son was the informant of his mother's death.

Frederick Street is a few streets down from me. If you want I can take a picture of it next time I am passing.

It would be great to get a picture of the place, I have to start researching in the Aberdeen area and that way I can get a feel for the families and how they lived.

Jacquie,
I went down that stree today and there is not much to report about it. There were no tenement buildings there but there was a large building that is now Frederick Street Services. Across from there is what looks like an old factory building. The large building that is now Frederick Street Services is probably the place you may be refering to as it looks like an old hospital or school. I have a couple of photos of the street on my camera. PM me your email address and I will pass them on to you.
I have also had a look at the town plan for 1866-1867 on the NLS and Frederick Street is full of houses, presumably tenemants. These must have been knocked down adn form what is now the car park to the above mentioned building. The building that I am refering to seems to have been a school in the 1860, Dr Bell's School. I am also presuming this changed to Frederick Street School as the 2nd website link has a photo of people from Frederick St School on it.
http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/aberdeen_se.html
The top left square is the one with Frederick St. 67 is at the corner of of this street and Park Street.

Also contains photos of Aberdeen at the turn of the 20th Century.
I hope that is of help for the now. I will have a look at other places on the web for more information on the place.
Regards,
Andy

Aberdeen area - locations now?
I don't suppose anyone knows the following in Aberdeen -
1. The Bridge of Don Coast Guard Station? or
2. 8 Fish Street, St. Nicholas.
The McConnachy family lived in each respectively in 1851 and then 1861. If anyone knows anymore about these locations or where I can get a photo of the location
then I would be very grateful (it is a wee bit far and expensive to pop over to Aberdeen from Australia!

The Bridge of Don Coastguard. As far as I am aware there isnt one. hopefully someone may be able to correct me on this as a I am not from Aberdeen but have been here for 3 and a half years.
There is a Fish Street that runs off of the Beach Boulevard to the south. It is a small street. I am not sure if this is the one you mean. on the NLS old town Plan Fish Street is still there.
http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/aberdeen_se.html
On this link it can be seen on the second box in and second one down. If you click on that it will enlarge it. You will find the street in the NW section of the image.
I might be able to get a photo of the street but when I passed it today there were building works in that area and I am not sure if it is closed off.

Ok there must have been a Coastguard Station up to the 1920s according to this article: http://www.bavidge.co.uk/black_dog.htm
