Clober House, Milngavie

Post by Muriel » Sun Jan 14, 2007 4:29 pm

Recent contact with some 4th cousins (through GR) has made me revisit a branch of the family I've neglected somewhat. Family recall says that there was some connection - possibly a cousin of my grandmother's - with Clober House. Googling it just brings up myriad stuff about the golf club & some mentions of the housing estate but nothing about the house. Vague memories of the name Blackwood but I haven't yet had the chance (or the finance) to search the censuses. Can anyone give me any information about the house & its owners - I have a photo of it, from which it looks like High Victorian.

Hi Muriel

Can't help you a lot but I do know that the Blackwoods were the last owners of Clober House before it became a golf course (perhaps I should say "pretty sure") One Miss Blackwood still lived in Milngavie when we lived there (at the Black Bull) from 1966 to 1982. There is a Blackwood Road in Milngavie called after the family.

I have a photo of Miss Blackwood handing over a collection of postcards to Sheila Peters the Head Librarian of Bearsden and Milngavie Library. This was done at the Black Bull at the same time as we were handing over photos of Old Milngavie for safe keeping. (You know how it is - get right in there for a photo opportunity  The Library are co-operative and you should be able to get help there I would think. Not sure of the phone number but it is on Drymen Road, Bearsden.

Hope you get help.

By the way, do you have problems with GR regarding mistakes that appear in their dates. I am going mad. Can't get it to edit and Lesley has the same problem, so it's not just me. Any hints?

Regards

Lorna

Lorna

Many thanks for the info. I haven't been aware of a problem with dates on GR but I'll have a proper check & let you know.

Hi Lorna & Muriel
Can't get it to edit and Lesley has the same problem, so it's not just me.
The problem I have is with dates, but I'm not sure it is the same as you are experiencing, but I suspect it may be a related issue. It happens if I want to change a child's date for instance, and I don't have dates input for the parents (if you upload a gedcom you seem to get away with not having all dates, but not if you input by hand...) . I get an error message along the lines of "child's date cannot be before birth of parent" or some other such nonsense. Clearly it can't cope if the dates don't appear to add up - which may relate to your problem, if you are trying to change dates and their software reckons it does not "add up."

Muriel - aplogies for hijacking your post.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley (and Lorna)

No problem. Yes, I've had the same problem with dates for inputting "new" children or updating ones who didn't have dates previously. But I've not noticed dates changing - altho' I haven't yet gone in and had a thorough check. I've got some updating to do so will have a look when I do it - I find that updating my tree on GR comes well down the Things To Do list.

Hi Muriel

I have just remembered that 2/3 years ago Nigel Orr of Milngavie produced a short history of Milngavie (See below for details - Admin). That is probably not the exact name of his book. It is a soft backed, quite inexpensive thing, but it would undoubtedly have info for you on Clober House/Blackwoods. Once again the library will be able to help you.

Cheers

Lorna

Hi Lorna

Just been adding to my tree on GR & had a look at dates - they all seem OK but I'll keep watch!
