Happy Anniversary?
It seems today marks three-hundred years since the union between our two countries. According to the Beeb the majority of the folk north of the border are happy with the union, whilst those in England wouldn't mind a split. They then showed some crass footage of football matches (but not the famous 1977 game) and then rolled out the Sean Connery clip of the Knight strolling down the Royal Mile on the opening of the new parliament building, followed by an well-spoken old duffer waffling on about a certain Mel Gibson film. When Aunty hashes things together in a hurry she doesn't half make a poor job of it. It's not as if the anniversary has crept up on the BBC all of a sudden!

300 years ago, today, the Scottish Nation ceased to exist and the Scottish Lords and Barons voted to become the United Kingdom.
The English parliament did not vote to join until May.
So, for the next 4 months, to be British only applies to the Scots.
So every Brit is a Scot!!
[It's a totally flaky argument, but it sounds good!

Dave Sloan - a true Brit (for the next 4 months, anyway!

Re: Happy Anniversary?
Intriguingly, BBC national TV news used the words "The Scottish parliament decided on this day ............", whereas BBC Scotland TV news used the words "Scotland decided on this day ......... It seems that wherever you live, the BBC story concerning the anniversary seems to vary when it comes to the stats etc. I thought it was the BRITISH Broadcasting Corporation

As they say "There are lies, damned lies and statistics". As a database developer I can tell you that it is possible, with the same set of figures, to produce several, wildly varying, "Poll Results".DavidWW wrote:Figures in various polls over the last few weeks have varied widely.garibaldired wrote:According to the BBC's Newsnight poll, 73% of the English and 56% of Scots questioned, wanted the union to remain.![]()

As ever it all seems to depend on the exact question asked![]()

You remember the USA presidential election that went right to the wire with umpteen recounts? I did the poll reports leading up to that for a Washington pollster. I can tell you right now; If the final result had matched the last two days actual figures it would have been a different man that walked into the White House!
