I wonder if anybody can hlep me. I have the death of Isabella Pannycook (nee Downie) in 1882 as occurring at 12 Royal Exchange, Edinburgh. I can't find out what she was doing there as her husband (James) was a Shepherd and later a general labourer and I couldn't find her in the 1881 census. Was it a hospital of some sort?

Hello again,

I found 12 Royal Exchange in the 1881 census and it was definitely a private residence. There were 13 households at the address.

The only family I can see with any sort of remote relationship is this one (Caputh being the common denominator). David Young is married to Margaret Stewart.

Royal Exchange was the section of buildings in front of the (previous?) City Chambers (opposite St Giles' Cathedral). The current City Chambers building on that site dates from the beginning of the 20th century.
