Shuttletown?

Post by rye470 » Mon Feb 05, 2007 3:57 am

Hi All,

Has anyone come across a place called Shuttletown? :?

I have just come across it on the 1861 census for my Gx3 Grandmother, as her place of birth. Shuttletown, Lanarkshire. Could it be Shettleston? Her year of birth is 1789.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

Yes it will be Shettleston. I remember reading that it was known as Shuttlestown.

Cheers,

Now there's a thought, - the Calton weavers are well known, - but were there also significant numbers of weavers in Shettleston/Shuttlestown :!:

Shuttleson rather than Shuttlestown is a local phonetic pronunciation and I doubt whether you'd ever find it spelt like that in any historical manuscripts, mind you enumerators may no have been the brightest lights on the tree.

Scheideston/Shettleston goes way back to the early days of the bishopric of Glasgow in the 12th. century.
Then from the east there came a wee hard man, oh hoa, aw' the wi fae Brigton.
