Windsor Street Govan ????

Hello All
Sorry if this quetion pops up on some other bit of this forum (thought I had posted it correctly ? ) The question I would like help with is there anybody who has heard of a Windsor Street in Govan ? I've tried the old name /new name site and multi-map etc but no luck.The name came up on a 1901 census and it's hard to read

Not sure which bit of the forum you wanted to post on (maybe the Scottish history & geography?), but this one will do! Someone with more knowledge of the area will probably come on soon, but in the meantime you might upload the census so we can all try to make out what it says. Welcome to TalkingScot

No "Street" but Susan Miller's "A Guide to Glasgow Addresses: Part II : 1826 - 1950 : Industrial City", gives a Windsor Terrace in Govan, off Linthouse Road.

Plenty other "Windsor"s as well, - several other Terraces, a Cottages, 3 Places, a Quadrant, and a Villas.

Have a look at the header pages on the census on ScotlandsPeople, - free, - to see if the detailed description of the enumeration district fits with Linthouse Road, - it may also confirm or otherwise your interpretation.

Can you give us an idea of the location? ie the district / parish information etc that's at the top of the census page?

I can't see Windsor anything in my old maps of Govan [1909 & 1980's] but Govan did extend over the river to Partick / Whiteinch so it may have been there.

When Govan became part of Glasgow city a lot of the street names were changed , and the entire area was redeveloped in the 70's and many streets disappeared so newer maps don't show them.

There was a Windsor Street in Scotstoun,[Harland Street] but that's too far out, there is another around St Georges Cross, but again not in the right area.

I'm typing this as I'm looking

I found this on roots web:
Enumeration District 25
Govan Road
Govan Road Murrogh Park House
Napier Street
Victoria Street
Windsor Street

so..... Napier Street is still there [ not in it's original form]
Present Day: off the Govan road near Orkney Steet , Neptune street.

I can't find a Victoria street on any of my maps either, BUT there is a Queen Street and Albert Street just there?
NLS is too slow to check just now

I'll post this now and no doubt AndrewP will find just the right map to point us in the right direction.

David asked me to elaborate on the Rootsweb information I pasted above.

No clever tricks I'm afraid, it was a simple 'google' that produced the information!

Quite how you reach there from Rootsweb home page is beyond me! Anyone else shed any light there?

The one I love on that page is "Dummies Cottage" [Enumeration District 16
] I must hunt it up!

Some valiant soul looks to have trawled through all the Govan EDs and extracted the street names........ I was rather hoping that this was perhaps a RootsWeb project to do the same for every ED in all districts

"Dummies Cottage" is quite probably the totally unacceptable, in today's PC world, the residence then, or earlier, of deaf and dumb people, - such a disability should be shown in one of the far right hand columns in the enumeration books from 1851 onwards.

Hello Shortfuse,

According to my favourite site for Glasgow street name changes it is now known as Gullane Street, Partick which would have been Govan then.

As there was already a Windsor Street in Glasgow it's name would have to have been changed when the merge took place.

Sorry Nelmit that was Wilson Street, not Windsor street
