Lyssands, Dalry, Ayrshire.....
Has anybody got access to a better map than me. I have an ancestor born at Lyssands. Is it a house, village or what. She was Janet Dickie born 15 July 1781 in Lyssands, Dalry. mother of James Spier of Goldencraig fame (see prev posting under Goldencraig)
Many thanks

Go to http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html (the National Library of Scotland's Digital Library) and select sheet 22 (Kilmarnock). Zoom in on Dalry parish - coloured pink in the north-west corner. As you zoom in closer, select the south-east corner of that parish and you will find Lissens, which I believe should be Lyssands that you are looking for. This map is from te 1890s.
Thomsons map of 1832 also shows it as Lissens.
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/547.html
or Armstrongs map of 1775, showing it as Lussens.
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/797.html
or on an earlier map by H. Mols, Lisseus
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... cfm?id=239
On the current map at www.streetmap.co.uk and input "232500,647500" in the search box, and select the OS grid button, then search. Zoom in, using the zoom control under the map. You will find North Lissens and South Lissens.
Never take spelling for granted. To answer your question, Lissens is most likely a farm.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Questions no sooner asked than answered. This is a fantastic site. Many thanks to all. I hope I can be of use to somebody in return one day.
By the way if anybody is interested in the Spiers/Speirs from W Kilbride & Dalry it might be worth looking at the Speirheritage group on Yahoo.
Many thanks again

My wife's a Dalry girl...........
She comments that Lissens Moss Farm still exists, - she recalls Jimmy MAIR the milkman from said farm delivering the milk.
Davie
PS And her mother confirms that the farm is 1 or 1 and a half miles NE of Dalry itself, so that area must be the location of the eponymous moss ....

Sarah, the Speir and Dickie combination perked up my ears. I have a James Dickie Speir in my Speir list, born in 1841, died 1917. He married Elizabeth Jane Roy in 1877 in Dalry. James was the son of Allan and Mary Torrance Speir. We've never figured out the Dickie connection but thought it had to have been a relative. Allan and Mary lived and died in Crosshouse, Ayrshire, but James immigrated in 1881 and died in Missouri. Sheryl
