Do you remember Dickinson 's shop or creamery ?

Post by grannysrock » Sun Apr 15, 2007 8:02 pm

Hi , Does anyone remember a shop somewhere probably in Edinburgh or Leith , which said Dickinson above one window and Creamery above the other ? I have a photograph of a family group- I think it will be 40's or possibly early 50's - taken in front of what looks like a fairly recently built house , and the aforementioned shop is in the background. The building containing the shop has 2 stories , the upper one having a "mock Tudor" facade. It looks like a shop not a creamery.

Not much to go on ! But you never know !

Hi Sally,

Can you scan this photo and upload it to the Gallery?

Hi Sally,

I don't recognise the buildings at all. Neither building looks typically Scottish for that era.

That was my thought too Andrew.

I am poor on names of streets but have a good memory for places and different buildings. This one would look out of place in most Scottish towns.
The street light on the right is also atypical unless it is actually part of an entranceway to the house.
Pity it doesn't show the next building :?
I did wonder if it was somewhere up in the Braid hills but they didn't have anything as commonplace as 'shops' did they :?:

Hope someone else recognises it Sally.

Hi Russell,

Braid Hills was less than a mile from home for my first 20+ years, and I am sure there was nowhere like that in the area. As you point out, that is an area with no shops. The shops in each direction leading out from there at Buckstone, Fairmilehead, Morningside and Liberton do not resemble the one in the picture.

All the best,

Andrew

Hi Andrew

The one part of Edinburgh I never visited was Cramond village. they had some interesting buildings I gather though. The nearest I got was walking past on the way from Ormiston to catch the ferry at Queensferry which dates me. There used to be a rowing boat which acted as a passenger ferry near the river mouth in Cramond.
I knew the old town well while working in James Thin's bookshop for a couple of years.
I can't recall any Mock Tudor buildings in the city or even the surrounding areas.

Hi Russell,

The only mock-tudor style building that I know of (from pictures only, I was pre-school age when it was demolished) was Parker's Store on the corner of Bristo Street and Charles Street, beside Edinburgh University's McEwan Hall.

many thanks for your thoughts Andrew and Russell,

I agree about the style of buildings - I have never seen anything like that shop in Edinburgh, but there's many parts I just don't know at all.

I will admit when I first saw the photo, I thought it might have taken down South. There was close family in Hazel Grove and Bradford . But my dad didn't seem to think it was them ( he knew them ) . The only person we know for certain in the photo is my great granny. But the majority of the other people in the photo appear on several other older family photographs . So they must have been iclose .

Drives you daft all this ! :)

Trying to remember if there is anywhere like that in Edinburgh though it looks English. Might be somewhere around Davidson's Mains???
