Langshot Farm

Post by drapadew » Fri Apr 27, 2007 8:07 pm

Can anyone tell me anything about Langshot Farm.
Was this a working farm or just the name of a area in Govan.I had a Alexander Hart, living there in the 1881 Census.
Thanks

Alexander Hart is described as being a farmer of 78 acres at Langshot Farm, Cecil St, Govan, but all of the other properties in the surrounding pages of that enumeration book seem to be residential numbered houses in streets, apparently urban. From the census information, my best guess is that this was a farm on the edge of an urban area.

All the best,

As Andrew says, a farm in an urban area; but the land was soon to be built on.
And very many of these houses themselves also disappeared.
This was from the 1960s onwards with the construction of the M8 motorway.

The name remains though - Langshot Street (originally Cecil Street)
But the farm itself now lies under said motorway.....

If you go to one of Andrew's favourite sites!

Select Glasgow [1892-4]
Select bottom left square (south west)
Select VI.14.1 (top row - 3rd from right)
You can see Langshot Farm just left of centre.
