Is this the same place?
Hi,
I was reading on my GGF's dc that he died at 19 Lyon St. Glasgow in 1901 and has an RCE: Vol8, P83 May 22, 1901 . However, I googled that address and noticed the 3rd paragraph on this page
http://www.donmouth.co.uk/family_histor ... nhist.html
Now I'm wondering if its one in the same place.

Your Lyon Street is in Glasgow, the one on the webpage you have quoted is in Hebburn, Newcastle upon Tyne. The two are over 100 miles apart, so I'm afraid the answer is "no".
All the best,

Hi Dennis,
This might not be the same Lyon Street, but it's the only one on the Valuation Rolls in 1913 with a house number 19.

If anyone remained there that long after his death, they might be named.

Thank you both Lesley & Mary:)
Those valuation rolls are something I should find out more about.

Thanks for the link
Hi Lesley,
Thanks for the link to the valuation rolls. You could be lost for weeks in all that material!
Sometimes, wandering around aimlessly seems the way to go. Maybe I am just less organized that many of you? However, I seem to turn up really interesting and useful bits when my brain is more or less in neutral. Here's an example. Yesterday, I came to TS, as I do now when I have a few spare minutes. I find just reading through posts is an education. I follow the links where they take me (& the few spare minutes can take hours). I followed a link on the Scots in Canada forum to the National Archives in Ottawa. Just idly typing in names and pulled up 2 real winners.
First was the WW1 attestation records for a maternal grandfather's brother. There is a lot of really interesting tidbits on those. I was tickled by the 'dragon on his right forearm'. Even more, by "free thinker" on the Religion line! No wonder he got himself on this side of the pond before he said that, if I know anything about his family!
The 2nd was another set of attestation papers for my great grandfather's brother's son from Lerwick. I had no concrete information on him before my discovery. The best part was my acquaintance with his 2 sons, well up in years and computer-less. I know, they will be simply thrilled to see copies. Best of all, accessing these records is free!
Does anyone else have success from apparently aimless methods? alysone

Hi Alysone
I think it's called serendipity
and we all do it.
Switch the brain into neutral. Trawl for a name; Google an address;
poke around in a local forum;
take a trip through someone's family tree just because they have one name that matches a wayout one of yours.
Its a good way to unwind if one of your searches turns up nothing.
I visited the Caithness website and found a post relating to a distant relation. She's not relevant to our main line but as she was born in the West Indies she has stimulated our curiosity. Now we wait to se if the original enquirer comes back to us [-o<
