bonsoir all
i am putting together a short family history and plan to give it to an old aunt who is visiting from australia her mothers side originated from gatehouse and was wondering if any member knows the area well i have traced the family to several locations in the town but i cant find the following 1/south side of back street 2/neilson square.any help welcome also if anyone who stays nearby if they could take some photos

Hi Derek,

Back Street can be seen on an 1854 map at www.old-maps.co.uk if you insert the co-ordinates 260000 and 556400, then click on "go". Zoom in using the control to the left. Back Street is above and parallel to Main Street.

Comparing that to a current map, Back Street now seems to be called Catherine Street. Main Street is now high Street. Click on the link below to see Catherine Street on a current street map.

I found no sign of Neilson Square.

tnx andrew i see that the old map site has changed before i could download an image and trawl through it espec when looking for a house in the back of beyond.cheers derek
