I found a whole branch of younger Cadenhead relatives who the census records say lived in Cluny. I found Cluny castle on the map northwest of Echt which is where the older Cadenhead aunts and uncles etc. lived, but no town or village of Cluny. The ANESFHS kirkyard map puts the Cluny cemetery somewhere near the castle. Is there a village or town of Cluny or has it been absorbed by another town? Or just disappeared?

Hi Carol,
It looks like Cluny was a rural parish that never had a village. It was made up of tenanted farms within a small group of estates. It is described as such in the Statistical Accounts of Scotland.
http://edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/ (select the link for non-subscibers)
The 1790s account is moderately long, mostly describing the farming of the estates. The 1840s account is one of the shortest I have seen. It doesn't even fill 1½ pages. It too describres (briefly) the estates and their tenanted farms, but no mention of any villages.
To see Cluny Castle, Kirk and Cemetery on a map go to http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ and search for NJ685125.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi
If you go into Genuki and go to Scotland there is a whole of Scotland Gazetteer it shows a Cluny in Fife as well as one in Banffshire and another in Aberdeenshire, plus other places with Cluny in their name
The try the individual county Gazetteers for further info

Cluny confusion!
Thanks Andrew! All of my relatives in that area were farmers working places like Hill of Corskie or Coskie and Dunecht Home Farm. My favorite is Woodside Cloghill in Newhills. The Cluny castle is grand. I found a picture previously on something called Eleanor's Pictures I think it was. Anyway there were pictures of many of the castles in Scotland.
Trotterbeck,
Now you see why I was confused over Cluny! As to being cousins, now that I've had a look at some of the records I think we all must be. DNA might be real scary in this instance!
