1891 Geography?

Post by Miss Poohs » Mon May 14, 2007 11:03 pm

I have found a 1891 census - for the Bonners. There is a little grandaughter recorded on it, Annie Bonner 1 yr old.

Her birth is recorded as being in Stirlingshire, Kirkintilloch.

Geography isn't my strong point, but I thought Kirkintilloch was in Dumbartonshire, can anyone tell me?

I'm a bit puzzled anyway - as there were no sons in the family only daughters, and the only daughter that was there on the day of that census that was married was Mary, but her married surname is Robertson, but she's noted as Mary Bonner as well.

I am ofcourse just assuming that Mary is the mother.

Am I being too detailed? :?:
Beveridge, Bonnar, Burns,Candlin, Colquhoun, Dewar,Graham,Hislop,Jackson & Robertson.
Martin & Nelson - all Liverpool
Allison, Beaton, MacLean, McLuskie & Todd.
Grant, McEwan, McLean & Syme.

Hi Miss Poohs,

Your geography serves you correctly. Kirkintilloch was always in Dunbartonshire, although close to the boundary with Strilingshire (Campsie parish / registration district).

For your matter of the married daughter, it is not uncommon to find married women listed by their maiden surname. In Scotland, it is not a legal requirement that a woman marrying takes on her husband's surname.

It must be well worth a look at the birth certificate on ScotlandsPeople for Annie Robertson in Kikintilloch in 1890.

All the best,

AndrewP

It's not a legal requirement in the UK full stop. I got married in 1996 in England and didn't take my husband's name. So on all official documentation I'm still using my original name. Nowhere do I exist with the "married" name.
seeking McColl from Donegal and Greenock, McKay from Antrim and Greenock;
Whiteford from Ballycastle and Greenock; Tucker from Port Glasgow, and McGinty.
