Old Falkirk Newspapers

Post by AnneMT » Sun May 20, 2007 6:08 pm

Not sure if I have picked the right board, but here goes anyway.

I am looking for football info from 1937/38. My uncle played for Falkirk FC during that year. It seems there was a headline in one newspaper about a goal he scored. Checked with Falkirk FC, they have no info/photos etc., but can confirm he did played 7 games with them during that year. Falkirk were 4th in league that year.

Since I lived in Glasgow and my father told me the story, I wrongly assumed the Evening Times was the paper concerned. I checked microfilm of Evening Times, at Mitchell Library, for months March to June of that year, assuming the goal scored had had an effect on their place in the league. No luck. Knowing my luck, the article concerned was on "pink pages", which were not archived

Now think it would probably be better/easier to check Falkirk papers, but do not have a clue, which paper to check. Am aware Falkirk Herald is main newspaper nowadays, but with takeovers over the years, I could have quite a trawl, as well as a trail, since I don't drive.

I am not a football fan, so could do with some help.

Hi Anne,

You're quite right, the Falkirk Herald would be the one.

Falkirk Library has copies of back editions on microfilm but I'm not too sure whether they'd do look ups for you - no harm in asking of course!

Providing you're not in a hurry, I could put it on my list for the next time I'm there. When Falkirk FC confirmed that he played the seven games - did they give any indication of dates during the two years?

Anne,

I have emailed the Falkirk Library on numerous occasions and they have been able to do lookups for me in the Falkirk Herald. The staff at the library are very helpful. Give them a quick email and see what they say.
