Strenroy on the Clyde
John Reid, born Strenroy on the Clyde, ship carpenter.
I'm trying to find this location and I can't seem to find it on old maps.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Nadine:
I've had a look on several map sites, but can't find it either. I'm wondering if it might be the name of a house or estate, rather than a town or village name.
Can you give us a time frame, or year that you are searching? Do you have an original document or letter with this wording that you could post to the Gallery for others to have a look and see if it rings any bells, or can be identified as another spelling?
Frances

Thank you Frances,
House or estate may be correct, interesting thought!!
This information is taken from Beers Commemorative Biographical Record of Kent Co., Ontario, 1904.
I don't have a birthdate for John Reid, but my guess is probably around 1800.
In the above book, it says he married in Scotland, Margaret Bennett and had 10 children. The first 4 were born in Scotland. They came to America in 1834 and for 2 1/2 years lived in Pennsylvania. Came to Canada approx. 1834.
The first 4 children are Agnes, Robert, Helen, and John.
Robert was born about 1825. He died in Ontario 2 Mar 1907 at 82 yrs.
Helen was born about 1831. She died in Ontario 22 Sept 1914 at 83 yrs.
oh oh I'll post more later...I've just been summoned to the field to start planting!!

Re: Strenroy on the Clyde
I know it's nowhere near the River Clyde but could his place of birth have been Stranraer? It was my first thought when I saw StrenroyNadineS wrote:John Reid, born Strenroy on the Clyde, ship carpenter.

Then I found a John Alexander Reid born to John Reid and Margaret Drew Bennet in Wigtown in 1834. Could this be their son?
Long shot I know but worth a thought.
Kind regards,
Annette M
