Windsor Hotel St. Vincent's St. Glasgow and Cathcart

Post by melody » Fri Jun 15, 2007 4:24 am

Hi there,
Anyone know if the building that was the Windsor Hotel on St. Vincent's Street in Glasgow is still standing? It was Mclean's hotel until 1890, then the Windsor. Last I can find it is 1913. My great great Uncle was married there in 1894. Alfred Campbell married to Joan Isa Mcphun.

Also does anyone know Cathcart? Frederick Campbell married Annie Lindsay Crawford in the parish of Cathcart in 1893 in a place that looks like it starts with the letter H but I can not read the word. I've tried Genuki for Cathcart but nothing looks like the right place.
Thanks,
Melody

If you upload a copy of the document you are looking at, perhaps someone will be able to decipher it for you. Instructions on how to put a copy of your document in the gallery can be found at:

As far as I can gather it was number 250 (1881 census and Glasgow Valuation Roll) and now used by Direct Line Insurance according to Royal Mail.

I'm almost positive it will be the original building as I used to work across the road at 255 and the even numbers at that part haven't been touched.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Holmlea is the first thing that comes to mind with Cathcart, although in 1893 it was a much bigger area than it is now.

windsor Hotel

Hi Annette,
Thanks so very much for answering my post. Mom and I are really hoping that 2008 is the year we go to Glasgow, so hopefully we can walk by this building. The writing for the place name in Cathcart does resemble Holmlea.
I appreciate the help as I couldn't even hazard a guess on that one.
Muchos gracias,
Melody

Hi Melody,

If you upload the entry as Frances suggested we could get an exact location. I am visiting a friend at Cathcart on Tuesday and could get a photograph if it's still there.

Kind regards,
Annette M

I'm going to be in Glasgow this week, if you like I'll take a stroll up St. Vincent Street and take a picture for you.
seeking McColl from Donegal and Greenock, McKay from Antrim and Greenock;
Whiteford from Ballycastle and Greenock; Tucker from Port Glasgow, and McGinty.

Windsor Hotel and Cathcart

I am most greatful for your responses. I'd of course love a picture but don't want to put you to any trouble.
I have to admit I haven't a clue as to how to upload the marriage registration for Frederick Campbell and Annie Lindsay Crawford. The address is the cottage, illegible, Cathcart. I don't have a printer or scanner, the image is just in my previous searches on Scotland's People.
Would I bring it up on Scotland's People and then somehow save it to my computer? And then what? ( I'm all trial and mostly error when it comes to computers.)
Alfred Campbell, the one who got married at the Windsor gave his occupaton as an iron monger. My great grandfather who was his brother in law was also an iron monger, and a black smith prior to that. I think hardware store when I hear iron monger, but with the locomotive and ship building going on in Glasgow then, perhaps it meant something else?
Thanks everyone,
Melody

Hi Melody

Its actually quite easy to download images from scotlandspeople onto your computer.

If you have already set up a folder for family tree images in 'My Pictures' you have a destination to send the image to.
When you have the image on screen click on 'Save As' and tell the computer where to find your Family Tree folder in 'My Images' then give the image a better name than the long series of numbers that scotlandspeople use. Most people select .jpg as their preferred image type (usually comes up under the file name box) .jpg images can be compressed to make them small enough to post to the gallery on TS.
Once you have downloaded the image go to

viewtopic.php?t=6496

That gives instructions on posting images to TS.
Most of us had to travel the same route as you are on with computers and found the errors a real trial too. You get there in the end.

Go for it :!: and give us another illegible place name to decipher :D
