Can anyone out there in TS land help me out, please.
For some time I've been looking for the location for the birth of my GGrandfather, Thomas McGugan. His 1872 b cert gives the usual address of "Old Buildings, Blochairn". Several maps later I am still no nearer finding out where his parents stayed. Would be grateful if any knowledgeable people could point me in the right direction.
Many thanks,
Helen

Haven't found anything on 'Old Buildings' yet but Blochairn is in the north east part of Glasgow as shown on multimap.
Have you looked for his parents in 1871 to see if it's the same address?
Kind regards,
Annette M

Annette,
Thanks for that - I already knew where Blochairn is today so Multimap doesn't really help. I need someone who knows the history of the area around Garngad Road - I've just got a feeling it was around there somewhere as there is an iron foundry almost on the doorstep and my GGGrandfather worked in an iron foundry.
I have looked at the 1871 Census but it's practically unreadable - just my luck that there appears to be a couple of surprise siblings that I know nothing about. I can feel yet another trip to Edinburgh coming on ...!!
Regards,
Helen

Hi Helen:
I don't think I'll be much help, but this site indicates that industry and residences were not as separated as they eventually became, but it does give some descriptions.
http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/t ... ry338.html
As you have a knowledge of where the area would be, some of these may be helpful.http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/townplans.html

I suppose it would be too unlikely for them to be at the same address as they were in 1881?1881 Scotland Census
