Streets in Gorbals

Post by crayspond » Tue Jul 03, 2007 6:59 pm

I wonder if anyone knows if Hallside Street was in the Gorbals in the year 1928. The only street of that name that comes up in searches is in Cambuslang.
Also South Stirling Street in Gorbals is hard to find too.
In my records both streets are shown in Glasgow - i am sure Cambuslang would have been like in the country in these days and my families all continued to live in the Gorbals/Glasgow area. I have a 1976 map of Glasgow and both streets are not there.
Can anyone shed any light?

Stirling Street (south) is listed as having been renamed Kilbarchan Street here:

http://www.douglasbrown.co.uk/rensts/strs.html

Hallside Street is listed as being off Naburn Street in the 1927 Glasgow directory:

Hope this helps

Hello Ailsa,

Further to Tom's information - You can view an old map of the Gorbals here.

Zoom in on VI 15 11 for Naburn Street and VI 14 5 for Stirling Street, which isn't marked but it's the little street that has Knox's Tabernacle on the corner.

Another good site for Glasgow streets that have changed names is http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/info-streetschanged2.html

Kind regards,

Hi Ailsa,

Thomas Flannagan is listed in the 1913-1914 valuation roll as the tenant in a flat at 34 Hallside Street.

Hallside Street can be seen in the pink-shaded square in the top-left corner of the following map.

South Stirling Street appears on the valuation rolls, but I can see no sign of it on the maps (probably too small - as per Annette's reply above).

(edited in later)
See Stirling Street on the 1857-1858 Ordnance Survey street plan.

from VI.14.5 in http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/glasgo ... entre.html

All the best,

Glasgow Streets

Thanks to everybody who gave such great advice - it;s easy to see why people can go off on different trails (esp maybe overseas searchers). Sometimes we look too hard at things (myself especially).
Amazingly Hallside St is right next to Naburn St where my husband's grandfather was born!
Great site.
