Premnay location, help?

Post by speleobat2 » Thu Aug 02, 2007 12:01 pm

In trying to track down an Elizabeth Clerihew, I'm finding myself all over the map--again! Ancestry has her born in Lonmay which is up near Crimond. Her death certificate says she lived in Premnay for 45 years. Her gravestone is in the Udny kirkyard and at least 5 of her children were born in Udny. The only Premnay I can find through the Edina site is over west of Oyne and not on today's map. Is anyone familiar with Premnay? This would put her right where I think my branch of Clerihews were located, but it's a long way from Udny and a very long way from Lonmay.

Hi Carol,

Yes, Premnay is next door to Oyne. You may find either of these parish maps of Aberdeenshire useful.

Premnay still exists today! I had a friend who used to live there.

Premnay location, help?

Well a magnifying glass helped clear up somethings and confuse others. It turns out that the death certificate says Elizabeth Clerihew was born in Premnay, but "lived in this district" meaning Udny 45 years. The Lonmay birth listing was the wrong Elizabeth Rennie. Between all of the websites she is married to James Rannie, Rennie, Rainnie and Rainey. Two of their children were twins--one is a Rannie, the other a Rennie on the LDS site. SP shows four out the ten kids under births and baptisms--all Rennie's. The death certificate is clearly Rainnie and the gravestone is Rannie!

Andrew: Thanks again for another map. The place name map is very handy because it shows the parishes and my Ordnance Map is modern.

The good news is that this Clerihew might be one of mine. The not so good news is that the column on her death certifcate for parents only said "Unknown"!

Back to work!
