On the 1901 Census I have Robert Ferguson, bootmaker, as a patient at 1 Blythswood Square, Blythswood, Glasgow.

Can anyone please advise me what was at this address at this time.

Hi John,

Have you read the census header information? (free on ScotlandsPeople when you access that census image)

That should tell you about these premises, if it was a hospital, clinic or the like.

Edit - a few minutes later
Ancestry.co.uk says it was Maryhill Hospital.

All the best,

AndrewP

Russsel,
I am not disagreeing with you, but it seems a strange place to have Maryhill Hospital.
I used to work there in the 1950's and apart from the RAC Club and my own office I don't really remember what else was there.

And the district of Maryhill is quite some distance away.

The building is for rent at the moment. No indication of what it was previously.

Ermmmmm a'm a wee bit worried 'cos 1 Blythswood Square is my bank an' naebiddy's telt me it wis movin'.

All the buildings in Blythswood Square were very upmarket townhouses in days gone by. It is unoccupied in 1881. Perhaps it was a nursing home in 1901. Hopefully John will look at the header and put us all out of our misery.

Annette,

Get up there tomorrow morning, you must have so much money they are going to run off and retire on it

The 1927 Directory for Glasgow shows that 1 and 1a Blythswood Square were company offices.
Other records also show that Maryhill Burgh along with Hillhead Burgh and Partick Burgh Councils built a combined hospital in Knightswood which remained there until well after all 3 burghs were annexed into Glasgow.

It is possible that at this time 1 Blythswood Square could have been some sort of Private Hospital / recovery unit given that several people are listed as patients but have families with them and the Head of the premises for census purposes is listed as a "Hospital trained nurse"
