Mystery - where is this building?

Post by AlanWef » Mon Aug 06, 2007 4:55 pm

I have uploaded two photos to the Public Gallery - people. They are members of my (Forrest) family. One shows my grandfather with some of his brothers. The other shows one of the brothers with his family.

I am initially trying to identify the Tower in the background and it is proving quite difficult. This generation of my family lived in Slamannan, Stirlingshire at the time, so it is likely that it is within a day's journey from there, though this is an educated guess. The shots were taken at the same place, around 1900, although probably not at the same time.

I have aired this question on Rootschat, so anyone who is a member there may have seen these already, so I apologise for that. Nevertheless, while there have been quite a few suggestions, I still do not know where it is. It is similar to Dunmore tower, but this doesn't stand up to close comparison. Neither is it Airthey castle. I sent the pics to RCAHMS and their expert agreed that it was neither place but was unable to give an identification. They did however suggest it might be the work of architect David Bryce.

It may of course have been demolished many years ago, but if anyone has any clues, I'd be very happy to hear them.

Sorry, the first photo I uploaded was the wrong one, I have just added the correct one, so I am talking about the two photos with the tower in the background.

Hi Alan

Just a stab in the dark here, but what about Fettes College, Edinburgh?

Hi Allan

When the picture of the brothers is enlarged, it looks to me like a church building rather than just a tower.

Best wishes

Allan

It bears some ressemblance to the 15th century Holy Rude Kirk in Stirling, which I believe is now Stirling Baptist Church.

Best wishes
