Andrew, do you have a parish map for Angus. I'm looking for Tannadice which I gather is near Montrose, but when I Googled for it all I got were adds for housing developments which assumed that I knew where it was. I have a Jannet Barclay possibility there in 1756 that I'd like to check out. The 1861 Census shows that her first child was born in Montrose and as usual, I'm lost in the woods without a decent map!

If you keep zooming out you will see it's proximity to Montrose.

Thanks Mary,
That worked and I added the website to my map folder. Now, if only sorting out my relatives was so easy!

There are two good series of parish maps on the National Library of Scotland's website.
http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotlan ... _list.html
http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotlan ... index.html
The first is the easier one to see the parishes as they are coloured to separate them. Unfortunately significant areas of northern Scotland were not covered by this series of maps. This series is from the 1890s, soon after the redrawing of many parish and county boundaries, to almost do away with detached parts of parishes and counties; and parishes that split across county boundaries (a result of the Local Governmen (Scotland) Act, 1889). Undfortunately, Montrose and Tannadice are in part of Scotland not covered on this series of maps.
The second, and older series of maps covers the whole of Scotland, but is not coloured, so takes a bit more studying. From the 1850s it shows the parish and counties before the tidying up of the boundaries that followed the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889. If you zoom in on the eastermost point of Angus, you will find Montrose town and parish. Pan the map westwards through Dun and Brechin parishes and you will find Tannadice parish.
All the best,
AndrewP

Andrew,
Thanks again for the maps. You're right the colored map is easier to use and it has more detail. Everyone should add this map to their list. I even finally found Cloghill out in Newhills which is where some of my family farmed for decades. The other map is very clear, but doesn't have as much detail in it but would still be good for an overview.
