By the way, during my latest burst forward (a dozen or more new Scots cousins \:D/ ) I discovered a Margaret Kelly who married John Dyer in 1884 in Dumbarton, Dunbarton.

Turns out lots of the Dyers I was hunting for in Glasgow were hiding in the shipyards in Dunbarton!

If you find that any of your Kellys snuck out of Glasgow and married Dyers, do let me know! :-)

PS Looks like Margaret Kelly was born 1864 (+/- 1 year), married John in 1884 and died two years later in 1886.

IGI Has several Margaret Kelly's born right time / place. If I get their marriage record some day, I'll let you know her parents names.

Hi Mark:

Thanks for the feedback on Margaret Kelly .... she was my mother! ... only by marriage, as she was born Smith, considerably later than you are mentioning.

No hits on your list for me that I know of, so far anyway. Great grandfather John Kelly was born 1845 in Galway, Ireland and married Catherine O'Reilly/O'Ryelly/Reilly in 1867 in Edinburgh. Helen (Ellen) b 1867, Mary b 1869 and John b 1871 were born there and Catherine 1875 and Elizabeth 1879 were born in Glasgow, where John Sr was a soft goods dealer/draper.

Re: Dyer / Tyre

Post by MicealT » Thu Aug 27, 2015 12:36 pm

Hello folks,

Hope you don't mind me popping my head round the door for a wee moment on this chat?

I noticed the interesting fact of the names Dyer and Tyre both appearing on the same thread and this is the first time I have seen or considered other potential spellings / mis-spellings of Tyre.
There is a well documented use of Tyer, he invented railway safety equipment.

I have seen far more oblique but nevertheless proven mis-spellings, often by tax collectors or census takers, who could barely write themselves, which is where a lot of spelling variations came from, but teaching a granny to suck eggs on that I think :)

Anyway just throwing Tyer into the mix as doing so means Dyer is only one letter different from Tyer [Tyre]. If you say Tyer with a cold then it's Dyer.

My Tyres were from the Inverkip area, including possibly Largs and Kirn, and before that from Ireland.

[there are three distinct Tyre roots that I have been able to find:

1) Tyre [Ireland] possibly from Mac an tSaoir
2) Tyre [England/Normandy] from 'attirer'
3) Tyre [U.S.A.] from the place name in the Bible, chosen as a surname by freed slaves, as told to me first-hand by a lovely lady from the State of Georgia many years ago]

Hope any or all of this may be of use to someone.

All the best ,

Miceal

The youngest two were Christened on the same day, but neither birth date is given
MARION LOGAN GEORGINA DYER - 02 APR 1841 - Glasgow, Lanark
ELIZA SCOTT ROBINA DYER - 02 APR 1841 - Glasgow, Lanark
They're twins... There is another Marion Dyer born about the same time who is the daughter of Robert's brother John.

Robert's parents were James Dyet and Marrion Logan (that's right, Dyet, with a 'T')
They were married 5 Dec 1800.

I know of (and have found IGI records / gotten copies) for these children:

Henry Dyet - 07 Nov 1799, Kilwinning, Ayrshire
David Dyet - 26 Feb 1804, Kilwinning, Ayrshire
James Dyer - abt. 1805, Kilwinning, Ayrshire
(have death cert w/ parents name & census records, no birth)
Robert Dyer - 29 Jun 1806, Girvan, Ayrshire
George Dyer - 7 Aug 1808, Girvan, Ayrshire
William Dyer - 6 Jun 1811, Barony, Lanarkshire
Marrion Dyer - 24 Oct 1813, Barony, Lanarkshire
John Dyer - 9 Dec 1815, Barony, Lanarkshire
Andrew Dyer - 4 Nov 1818, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Sarah Dyer - 5 Oct 1820, Glasgow, Lanarkshire

Records for some of the later children include the birth number of the child. William was Marion's 7th child, so I am still missing one. Could well be a Joseph.

Marion Logan's Parents were David Logan and Sarah Service. Early on I found a birth record for James Dyet in the right place and at about the right time with parents James Dyet and Marrion Marshall, but now that I have more children I suspect that James' father's name must've been Henry. Father's father: Henry, Mother's father: David, Father: James But I can't find that birth record either. :(
paddyscar wrote: Have you looked at the ScotlandsPeople birth reg for Hugh in 1835?
Hadn't, so I did. :)

11/10/1835
TYRE HUGH
WILLIAM TYRE/ELISABETH LOCHHEAD FR595
M
Paisley High Church
/RENFREW
573/001 0030 0146

I suppose it is not impossible that this is Robert's brother William... If the day and month of birth were close to what I have for Hugh, I would probably be more excited...

Maybe I'm missing something:

Working on:
Tyre [Inverkip area]
The mining community at Silverbanks, where some of my ancestors lived
Blaikie [in the Swinton, Berwickshire area]
Duncan [possibly also from the same area of Berwickshire]
Caldow [of Kilwinning, prior to that, Auchinleck]
