Welcome aboard and I hope you find this group as useful and entertaining as I do! I just discovered a RAE connection for myself yesterday so I'm beside myself with excitement at having a new name to look up - isn't that pathetic! Anyway, one of my distant relatives Mary Ann Mitchell married Alexander Rae in 1861. He was a master carpenter the son of another carpenter, also called Alexander Rae, and Eliza Rae, m.s. Forbes. They were from Cluny. I have traced Mary Ann and Alexander's three children and the marriage of one of them. Do they sound like your RAE family at all?

Sorry Jude, I've been out of commission for a while.
My Laings are from the Belhelvie area. For several generations (abt 1775-1875) they ran the smithy at Eggie, Belhelvie.
