A few suggestions that I hope will help next time:

Many of us find that using wildcards gives more accurate results than soundex. The following link will give you some hints for how to do this:

This is something that can be fixed and shouldn't have happened. SP will refund your credits if you send a contact form and estimate the number of credits lost and explain what happened. It is their fault and not yours-- I'm sure it's due to the site being so overloaded lately.

If you have lost credits i.e. paid to see something and then find that you are not able to view that item, then I'd suggest you contact SP and explain the problem. There is a link at the bottom of their page "contact us". Click on it then follow the links and instructions.

I always try the exact name first & then use soundex next if it has said no matches...

I give soundex a miss as I find it does not help.
I'd suggest you try using wildcards instead, as they tend to let you widen the seach a little without returning lots of extra unlikely results. See our article in the Talking Scot Library if you've not worked with them before:

Thank you for the tips, I'll have to save that page to remember all those wildcards, I've not used those as yet.

Thankfully SP has been good this afternoon & hasn't crashed at all but I will send a contact about last night's problems.

I've finally found the 1861 census record that belongs to Patrick MCIVOR
so I've had a good day... even if I will have to upload to the gallery to decipher the 'Where born' for his wife Mary Jane.

I won't sound like a broken record here but will urge you to contact SP and explain about the difficulty with your credits. It doesn't sound like the system was working as it should. They really are very human....and very likely to offer some credit reimbursement...which you are really entitled to!

Taking a guess with a search on Ancestry....perhaps this is your 1861 Mary Jane?

Yes that's 'my' Patrick & Mary Jane McIvor, No 420.
I can see Ayrshire Craigie now that I know what it is but would never have guessed it.

I tried to upload the image to the gallery earlier but it wouldn't let me...

Not sure if I did something wrongly or not but I gave up & went to bed early instead... so now I'm awake really early

No need to upload now thanks to you, & I have a few hours to look for more McIVOR info before daylight.

I don't think you did anything wrong....I recollect that TalkingScot has a limit for how many images (actually how much space) ordinary members can utilize within the Gallery. If you delete your old ones you can make room for another.

That disna quite add up tho'..... something odd there, as there aren't any other files taking up space. Unless the one file you were trying to upload exceeds 1024kb - i.e. bigger than 1Mb?

I couldn't work out how to delete the first file I uploaded & yes the file size was too large on the new one... but I don't need to upload it now at all so no worries.
I will remember to check the file size in future before I try to upload.
