Hi Sarah,
I'd a wee look at the 1861 census index on CD, and 12yr old gr-son Marion is as...

James BURNS, 12, born East Kilbride. 647. Ed 14. Page 27. Line 24.

...who seems to be as 2yr old James SMITH, born Hamilton on the 1851 census...

Another confusing family!
Jack :?

Ah, Ancestry
You sure he's not the son of Marion's brother?

1851
65 Castle St, Hamilton, Lanarkshire
Gavin Burns, 25, Head, born Hamilton, Lanark, Grocer & Spirit Merchant
Margaret Burns, 27, Wife, born Hamilton, Lanark
James Burns, 3, Son, born Hamilton, Lanark
Margaret Burns, 5, Daughter, born Hamilton, Lanark
Mary Burns, 22, Sister, born Hamilton, Lanark, Servant

No... I think you're right since he is in his grandparents' house in 1851 as James Smith

Although James IS missing from the Gavin Burns family in 1861... who have now all become Brown on Ancestry... probably really Burns?

1861
15 Dale St, Glasgow Calton, Bridgeton, Lanark
Gavin Burns, 36, Head, born Hamilton, Lanark, Hand Loom Cotton Weaver
Margaret Brown, 38, Wife, born Hamilton, Lanark
Margaret Brown, 15, Daughter, born Hamilton, Lanark
Gavin Brown, 9, Son, born Hamilton, Lanark
Mary Brown, 7, Daughter, born Hamilton, Lanark

Yes, you're right Sarah,
Looks like more Ancestry errors...the 1861 census CD has:

1861. 644-3. Ed 72. Page 13. Lines 19 - 23
Gavin BURNS, 36
Margaret BURNS, 38
Margaret BURNS, 15
Gavin BURNS, 9
Mary BURNS, 7

Sorry to re-open such an old post, but we seem to have a common ancestor.....

John Cairns (1829-1879) and Marion Burns (1827?-1904), both of Hamilton, Lanarkshire were my Great-Great-Grandfather and G-G-Grandmother.

Hope you are still an active user on this site - we can exchange information, and I have some photos and monumental inscriptions that may be of interest.
