Hello Thrall
Thank you so much for contacting me. Yes, I thought that with this being such an old post you would have everything in hand ... but one never knows.
As to being related... only by marriage. My research on the Duncan family was through the spouse my 2 great grand AUNT Helen Affleck of Cockburnspath/Oldhamstocks. Helen married James Duncan and the couple followed my 2 great grand father Andrew Affleck (Helen's brother) to Waikouaiti, Otago, New Zealand in 1858
Unfortunately James was killed in a tragic work accident in 1867 http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bi ... s+duncan--
So how is James Duncan related to Your Alexander Duncan who married Annie McFarlane ... cousins
[1]Gideon Duncan & Isabel Allan
--[2]Peter Duncan Birth 18 Oct 1783 in Ladykirk, Berwickshire M. Elizabeth Currie
----[3]James Duncan Birth 02 May 1820 in Allanbank, Edrom, Death 10 Sept 1867 in Waikouaiti, Otago M Helen Affleck
--[2] Gideon Duncan Birth 14 Nov 1788 in Ladykirk, Berwickshire M. Isabella Scougall
----[3]Alexander Duncan Birth 18 Jul 1840 in , Coldstream, Berwick, M. Annie McFarlane
Thrall, my email is charlesATaffleckdna.com If you wish I could send you a graphic of the relationships that I have ...but no matter if you do not wish to continue
Kind regards from a very cold New Zealand. -20 degrees in the South Island for the last 3 nights
Yours
Charles Affleck

Re: The Proverbial Brickwall
Hello good people,
Just stumbled onto this forum by accident when searching Bing for Blaikie and Swinton.
I did some research a good few years ago into my family tree and on my maternal grandmother's side got as far back as a Maria Blaikie who was, I think, born in Swinton and died in Galshiels [this is from memory so please forgive me if that is incorrect].
My original research was done on my old iMac computer and saved as an Appleworks file {in .cwk format]. I will be able to open these old files but they will be a mess, from previous experience, so it may take me some time to write them out again properly.
You can imagine my surprise when I type "Maria Blaikie" "Swinton" into Bing and found this topic and forum. My maternal grandmother's maiden surname was Duncan so, from reading this post I am sure that I am part of this Blaikie / Duncan mix as is being discussed which is an exciting find, so Hi! to all of you!
I will do my best over the coming weeks to rescue the work I did before and see if it ties in with what you have posted on here already.
All the best for now,
Miceal Tyre
