McVake.....

I had another look at the dates I've got. Something very weird here. The Catherine McVake on the ICI has birthdate 16 Oct 1865, but the birthdate I have for my great-grandmother (Catherine's daughter) is 11 Nov 1864. No wonder I can't find her. Back to the drawing board.

I don't know if i'm helping or hindering with these - taken from the IGI.
Seems the McVAKE name was also as McVICKERS etc at times.
Where did you find the birthdates for Helen 1856, Annie 1858, and G-GM Margaret 1864?
Do you have details of your GG-GM Catherine McVAKE's DC?

Hi Scozzie,

This might have nothing at all to do with your family, but you never know!

I just came across the name McPake while searching for something else and thought how similar it is to McVake. They seem to have come from Ireland, so I was thinking mayby a combination of Illiteracy and funny accents resulted in the variation McVake.

Yikes! A few days ago I thought there weren't many McVakes! I can't remember where I got the birthdates for Annie, Helen & Margaret. Family members told me the marriage of Thomas Smith & Margaret Clark was in September 1896. That would make her 32 at the time (according to the birthdates I have). Their daughter (my grandmother) was born in 1898; I don't know the birthdates of her siblings.

Karen mcc - I am also looking for McKinlay in Lanarkshire.

I'm new to this - please be patient with me.

Hi again,

My GGGGgrandmother was Mary McKinlay bc 1784 Ireland, d 1874 Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. Her parents were John McKinlay and Agnes Carlin. She was married to Philip Lochiel. This is all I have so far.

I typed McVake into Google and amongst the hits was this site:

which if you scroll down through you'll find a listing for a Marion McVake whose parents are named as Davie shows above....William McVake and Janet Scott. Looks like you might have another rellie hiding out there somewhere....

Jack, you are a star!! I just got off the 'phone to my mother. She didn't know most of the people on your list, but she has a vague memory of someone living in Longlee Terrace. McVick is probably right too - we were never sure about the spelling of it, thought it was either McVake or McVaik. Thankyou SO much. I was named after the Catherine Clark on the list.

Hi Scozzie

It would appear that you have assumed that the Catherine McVake b. 16 Oct 1865 is you g grandmother's mother.

The record of this Catherine's birth only shows that a Catherine McVake was born on this date.

If your birth date for your g grandmother is correct(11 Nov 1864) then the Catherine McVake b 16 Oct 1865 can't be her mother.

Sorry if I confused you. I didn't mean to infer that she was your great grandmother's mother, only that she was probably some sort of relative.
