Hi Rosie
The forum guidelines are clearly laid out in the Essential Reading section:
"Talking Scot & mentioning living or recent persons":
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6601
Although we understand that people are often looking for recent family members, TS is not the forum for queries of that nature - there are many other forums which can help with more recent searches.
Also, I am trying to find out information about my Grandparents who were born in 1899 and 1902 and their parents. Is the 1800's too recent? Now I am really confused....
Now that we can help with. No problems there. :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Ok, Good. I have actually started looking at other sites for the more recent ones. I am looking for my Grandfather's parents Alexander and Catherine Stoddart. Alexander was a Chemist. My Grandfather Charles was raised by Mary Gillan though and took her last name. The only date I have is 1899 when he was born.

I would also like to find out information about my Grandmother's parents: Joseph and Margaret Paker. The only date I have is my Grandmother's birth 1902. Her name was also Margaret.

Do you have Charles' birth certificate? Is that where you found the parents' names, or was it on his marriage certificate?

Of course, we can help you find out about your grandparents! :D They fit into the guidelines of the forum as referred to you by Lesley.

All the best,
Sarah

No, I don't have his birth certificate. I looked on the Scotland site, and it was not listed. I looked for Stoddart and Gillan with no luck. (There were two, but they didn't match the other information.) I know my Mom said that her family originally came from Ireland, so I don't know if that could be where he was born or not. I also haven't been able to find their marriage certificate because it is a year or two past the cut off. Hopefully they will get more up soon!

Have you tried finding your Grandfather on the 1901 census?

That should give you his place of birth and who all was living in the home with him - either the Gillans or his birth parents.

If they were living in Scotland at the time.

This is the only Alexander Stoddart I can see in 1901 with a plausible occupation:

1901
Harbour Square, Ardrossan, Ayrshire
William John McKay, 36, Head, born Banff, Banffshire, Pilot (harbour)
Catherine McKay, 32, Wife, born Corpach, Invernesshire
Angus M McKay, 8, born Fort William, Invernesshire, Scholar
Catherine M McKay, 3, Daur, born Ardrossan, Ayrshire
Frank Scott, 21, Boarder, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Printer-compositor
Alexander Stoddart, 25, Boarder, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Druggist

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Rosie
A search for Charles Stoddart on SP gives 2 in Lanarkshire for the years 1898-1899. These are the two you have already looked at and neither of these are one you are looking for?

You mentioned earlier:
Charles parents are listed as Alexander and Catherine Stoddart
Were these the names given at the time of his death?

Best wishes
Lesley

Yes, those were the names given at the time of his death. The first part of his death certificate has Charles Gillan formerly Stoddart and then under the parents Alexander Stoddart Chemist and Catherine Stoddart.
