Yes - that was parts of Morningside Cemetery. The westmost part of the cemetery was built over in the early 1970s by Morningside Court and Balcarres Court. Part of the southern edge of the cemetery was built over, I think at the end of the 1970s by The Crescent (part of Morningside Drive). The original entrance area at the east end was built over at the beginning of the 1980s by Belhaven Place. A derelict lodge house and summer house were also demolished to make way for Belhaven Place.

I think some graves were removed (or possibly built over with the headstones removed?) for Morningside Court and Balcarres Court. I have a distant memory of a heap of broken headstones at that end of the cemetery. As far as I know the ground that the other buildings were put on had not been used for burials.

All the best,

AndrewP

I suspect it was not a large print run and is probably out of print. Amazon know of it, but don't have any available at this time.

Amazon: Monumental Inscriptions In Morningside Cemetery As They Were In 1981, In 2 Volumes by Members Of The Morningside Association (Hardcover - 1982)

I guess it may occasionally come up for sale on Amazon or other online bookshops.

All the best,

Hello Anne,

Here’s the rare version. It might be cheaper if you can find one that’s well done.

Hi Paula,

If you google Morningside Cemetery, Edinburgh a whole raft of articles etc. come up including a listing for the Morningside Heritage Society http://www.morningsideheritage.ik.com/ Someone there might be able to point you in the direction of a copy of the monumental inscription book. There is also an article from the Scotsman 2003 saying that 2000 of the headstones were laid flat because they were found to be unsafe!

Hi Andrew and Alan,

WOW!

Sounds like a fantastic book to have, but at that price, since I only have one family from that area, I think I'll have to pass on this purchase.

Many Thanks! :)

Regards,
Anne H
