In 1841, the previous street was Cartsburn Street which you should be able to find on Google maps. I suspect St James Street, which seems to have been quite densly populated may lie under what looks like a modern warehouse or supermarket!
In 1841 the next street metnioned is St John's street. I wonder if that is the modern day John's Street? Perhaps St James Street lay where the car parks and what look like industrial units seem to be today?
A look on the maps at NLS may sort that one out.

Thanks for that!! John Street was St John Street and Stanners Lane was Stanners Street - but still no sign of St James Street.LesleyB wrote:In 1841, the previous street was Cartsburn Street which you should be able to find on Google maps. Mary Clark was born in Lesmahagow and was a widow in 1851.
James Clark was born in Dalserf.
Everything else seems as it should be.

Hi caljam
At http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/greenock.html
on map square II.6.22 (map of 1857) I can see Cartsburn Street & St John's Street, but I'm just not seeing St James St. If you do download the 1851 from SP remember to download the free header page which should give some indication of the route taken by the enumerator, and perhaps help pinpoint the street.
Best wishes

It is confusing right enough. I'd totally agree that the children living with Mary Clark in 1851 are the children of James Murray and Janet Rennie.
Janet Rennie was born anytime between 1807 - 1811, at Renfrewshire according to the 1841 census, which means she could have been born before Mary Harvey married Robert Clark.
The only spanner in that train of thought is David Rennie who was living with James and Janet in 1841.
Here are some other children of Mary and Robert -
Results for: All Countries
Father: Robert Clark, Mother: Mary Harvey
1. ISABEL CLARKE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 01 JUN 1817 Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland
2. JEAN CLARK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 17 MAY 1812 Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland
3. MARTHA CLARK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 DEC 1813 Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland
4. MARY CLARKE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 05 AUG 1822 Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland
5. MARTHA CLERK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 NOV 1815 Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland
I'd be tempted to look at David Rennie's death entry in 1864 to see who his parents were.
Regards,
Annette

Good point about David Rennie, Annette. And what about Mary Clark too? If she survived until after 1855, then her death may indicate any husband(s) and of course her parents (if the informant knew all these details, though!)
Could she be the mother of James Murray? Coudl she have had James, then perhaps her husband died and she married Mr Clark?
Best wishes

The 1861 is confusing at Ancestry which is why I didn't post it. She is with Margaret Murray age 33 (should be 23?) and Jane Murray age 77LesleyB wrote:On SP there is a Mary Clark , other name Harvey born +/- 2yrs of 1787 who died in Lanarkshire, Dalserf in 1875 (which gives 2 more census years to see her in!) Worth a check too, I reckon. Right name combination, right age, right place....
