Henry Gordon - where did he go and where did he come from?

HI Carol

Sorry I missed your posting earlier. I only checked up to 1901 for Henry and as I could not find a birth for him I have spent most of my time looking for this I think I have viewed every male birth for a Gordon in the 1870's and then ofcourse searched for death and marriage of Mary as I had her birth details from viewing the extract at Edinburgh or so I thought. To be honest I thought that he had left the country and was going to check that out next. I will be back in Edinburgh within the next few weeks and I will check out the 1917 death. Many Thanks

It's him. I peeked! I'm not much good at suspense...

The Gordons rank right up there with the Munros, Taylors etc. for the Find a Needle in a Haystack Award! I searched for Munros and Taylors until my eyes went crossed!

Looks like the earlier family members are easier to find though. I saw several on the census records from 1841 on. If you need them, let us know.

My Gran was a Munro before she married its a nightmare, when you go into register house and type in Munro not sure whether to laugh or cry. I have a feeling though that when I get so far back I will need to have a look at Irish records as my dad informed my today that he thinks my grans side originated there, just to add to the confusion. My mum was adopted so I am searching both birth and adoptive family on that side too and this all started becasue I wanted to find out who my mum's birth mum was. It has become an addiction. I am glad though that I have not had to search English records alteast we are able to view everything in Edinburgh which makes it so much easier than having to actually buy every certificate.

Did you happen to note down any details of Henry's death I won't get into Edinburgh for alteast two weeks and like yourself I am not good at waiting. Thankyou for taking the time to confirm that it is Henry.

Hi again,

Henry died Feb. 12, 1917 in Burnside, Auchtermuchty, Fife. He was 38 and a grocer and wine merchant and single. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis.

The informant was his sister Jessie Murphy. Her address was 123 Dundee Street, Edinburgh.

His parents are given as John Gordon, saddler, deceased and Margaret Gordon ms Drysdale. Doesn't say deceased so maybe she was still alive in 1917. If you figure her birth date as 1845, then she would have been 72 in 1917.
